DUO Flows
As part of my role at IntelliFlux Controls, I led the design and product management of APRICOT’s Decision Tree tool, a critical feature used by process engineers and data scientists to build and manage digital unit operation flows. This project aimed to transform an internal prototype into a market-ready solution that could support real-world applications such as pipeline analysis, leak detection, and automated client reporting. Through iterative research, prototyping, and collaboration with the software team, I redesigned the tool to deliver a scalable, intuitive, and client-friendly interface that improved usability, streamlined workflows, and enhanced adoption across various end users.


Problem
The original DUO Flows interface (old version) allowed users to simulate industrial unit operations by connecting tanks, pumps, and alarms in a node-based editor. While functional, it had several issues:
Cluttered Controls: Configuration and simulation options were scattered, requiring extra effort to navigate.
Poor Learnability: New users struggled to locate projects, glossary, and features.
Limited Feedback: Simulation results and alarms lacked clarity in presentation.
Unpolished Flow: Switching between building, configuring, and running simulations was unintuitive.
The goal was to redesign DUO Flows into a streamlined, professional-grade simulation tool with a clear structure, modular design, and intuitive user flows.




Solution
Restructured the experience into a task-based navigation flow (Home → Add → Edit → Config → Run) so users could move step by step from building to executing simulations without confusion. The node editor was streamlined with clear color-coded connections and a reusable library of unit operations, making complex system modeling easier to understand and scale. Centralized all simulation settings into a dedicated Config panel, aligning inputs like flow, pressure, and concentration with real-world engineering needs, while the Run dashboard now provides real-time totals, alarm states, and visualized graphs for clearer feedback. Finally, added a Presentation Mode that strips away UI clutter, allowing engineers and educators to showcase system designs cleanly during demos or training sessions.






Outcomes
The redesigned DUO Flow provides operators and engineers with a far clearer and more efficient simulation experience. By restructuring navigation into logical steps, color-coding flows, and centralizing all configuration options, the system makes it faster to set up, monitor, and adjust complex processes. Real-time dashboards with alarms and graphs improve situational awareness, helping teams respond quickly to issues and reduce downtime. At the same time, the modular editor and presentation mode make the tool scalable for advanced multi-stage systems while also supporting training and communication needs. Together, these improvements not only streamline daily plant operations but also help clients lower onboarding costs, optimize energy and resource use, and make better-informed management decisions.
